January 5, 2010, Austin, Texas—Sweet Leaf Tea Company, the makers of all-natural, organic beverages has moved its office to historic Penn Field. The newly designed headquarters for the Austin-based company is a testament to the fast growth of the brand over the past 12 years and the future growth on the way.

 

Sweet Leaf Tea’s new office is one of several historical buildings in Penn Field, a retired United States Army airfield intended for pilot training during World War I, that have since been modernized to house some of Austin’s most recognizable companies. The company’s new space was completely gutted and reconfigured, but was made to complement the structural wooden trusses, wide-open area and immense showering of natural light that was part of the building’s core structure.

 

The team in charge of the historical building’s redesign, Wiese Hefty Design Build, had a unique challenge in that the new space also needed to match the cultural needs of a company that believes in both working hard and playing hard. “Sweet Leaf’s company culture is very spirited and funky and we wanted to reflect that energy in the design,” said Kristin Wiese, AIA partner and architect of Wiese Hefty Design Build. “We aimed to create a balance between the historical quality of the space, the modern amenities and the culture of a young and growing company.”

           

From the “We Believe” wall at the front entrance and the “Grannyisms” on the doors to the custom bottle cap bar and freshly painted murals, the recognizable markings of Sweet Leaf Tea’s identity are emblazoned into the building. In addition to the extra room employees’ dogs now have to roam, the new space is also home to a ping-pong table, shower and lockers for employees who ride their bikes to work. “Austin is a big part of Sweet Leaf Tea’s DNA and we wanted a space that was representative of both,” said Clayton Christopher, Sweet Leaf Tea’s Founder and CEO.
